The Livestock and Poultry Research and Development Center of Visayas State University is mandated to advance research, development, and extension initiatives that improve the productivity, health, and sustainability of livestock and poultry systems. At its core, the Center serves as a research-to-service hub, generating science-based technologies and management practices that support efficient animal production while upholding animal welfare and environmental responsibility.
LPRDC plays an important role in responding to the evolving needs of farmers and the livestock industry by developing improved systems for breeding, nutrition, health management, and production. It actively collaborates with local government units, farmer organizations, and industry partners to promote the adoption of improved technologies and best practices. Through training programs, demonstration farms, and accessible knowledge products, research outputs are translated into meaningful applications that enhance farm productivity, support food security, and contribute to rural livelihoods.
Anchored in the University’s commitment to agricultural development and community service, the Center continuously strengthens its programs by integrating modern technologies, biosecurity measures, and climate-resilient approaches into animal production systems. It also advances a One Health perspective and promotes ethical and sustainable livestock and poultry management. As it expands its research capacity, core laboratories, and learning networks, LPRDC is steadily positioning itself as a regional center for innovative and resilient animal agriculture in Eastern Visayas.
LPRDC operates under a strategic framework anchored in sustainable animal agriculture, animal biosecurity measures, inclusive rural development, and climate-resilient approaches of animal production systems that are paramount to the regional landscape of Eastern Visayas.
The center implements and supports research on climate-resilient, productivity-enhancing livestock and poultry production systems, and regional livestock and poultry health security using a One Health approach tailored to Eastern Visayas. Integrating basic and applied research on animal genetic resources, nutrition and feeding, health management, production systems, forage resource and development, animal welfare, and waste management to address low productivity, backyard-oriented systems, and climate-related vulnerabilities in livestock and poultry.
The center institutionalizes technology transfer, collaborates with government and non-government agencies for capacity building and policy support by establishing learning farms, demonstration sites for farmer-level training, and a digital knowledge platform that connects research outputs to farmers, extension workers, LGUs, and policymakers.
The center inclines to generate locally adapted production technologies in animal nutrition and feeding, production systems, animal products, and breed or genetic improvement strategies. It also operationalizes integrated disease surveillance, animal welfare and community-level animal health initiatives, diagnostic support and biosecurity frameworks for priority livestock and poultry diseases, and conservation initiatives of genetic resources.
To promote the optimal utilization of available University facilities, equipment, technical expertise, and research capabilities in support of the University’s research, extension, instruction, innovation, and technology transfer functions, the Livestock and Poultry Research and Development Center (LPRDC) provides the following services to internal and external clients. These services are implemented through the shared use of existing facilities and resources of the Department of Animal Science and other University units, subject to availability and applicable University policies.
