Promoting Mangrove Conservation: RCCRDC Joins Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Day 2025 for World Mangrove Day Awareness
In celebration of World Mangrove Day, the Regional Climate Change Research and Development Center (RCCRDC) proudly participated in the 2025 Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Day held on April 29, 2025, with a focused lecture on mangrove conservation and sustainable coastal practices.
The session, led by Dr. Dennis P. Peque, RCCRDC Director, provided local fisherfolk and farmers with valuable insights into the ecological and climate benefits of mangrove ecosystems. Participants learned about native mangrove species found in the region, proper propagation techniques, and the concept of mangrove zonation—a key element in ensuring the survival and growth of mangrove forests in coastal areas.
The event drew strong support from the Bantay Dagat Association of Baybay City, emphasizing the importance of grassroots collaboration in environmental education. The activity was also part of RCCRDC’s support for #WoMangroveWarriors, an initiative by the non-profit Communities Organized for Resource Allocation (CORA), founded by environmental advocate Antoinette Taus. This partnership reflects the Center’s broader commitment to community-based climate adaptation, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
Through this initiative, RCCRDC continues to equip communities with practical knowledge and conservation skills that not only protect natural resources but also open up opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. Dr. Peque expressed hope that the lecture would empower participants to take an active role in restoring and safeguarding mangrove ecosystems in their own communities.
As part of its knowledge management efforts, RCCRDC is working to integrate these learning materials into ongoing extension activities, ensuring that best practices in mangrove conservation are shared and replicated across other coastal areas in the region.
