VSU Innovation Hosts Intellectual Property Master Class
Visayas State University (VSU), through its Innovation Office, conducted the Intellectual Property Master Class (IPMC) on August 27–29, 2025, at the OVPREI Breakout Room. The three-day intensive training was supported under the DOST-PCAARRD RAISE 8 IPTBM Project Phase 2 and brought together faculty members, researchers, and staff from VSU academic departments, research centers, and VITA campuses.
The IP Master Class emphasized the importance of IP in securing inventions, technologies, and creative works, especially in their functions to ensure that VSU research outputs are correctly acknowledged, protected, and turned into effective solutions for society.
The event was designed to enhance the university’s capacity in intellectual property (IP) protection and management, equipping participants with essential knowledge and practical skills to safeguard innovations and maximize research outputs.
The program was structured into three modules, delivered through expert-led lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions. On Day 1 (August 27), Prof. Alan B. Loreto provided an introduction to IP management, offering an overview of the IP system and the different types of IP protection. Day 2 (August 28) focused on prior-art and patent search, with Ms. Maria Louella C. Tambis (ITSO Head) and Engr. Cristilyn V. Bacariza (RAISE-8 IPTBM Project Technical Assistant IV) facilitating lectures and workshops on understanding patent documents, conducting prior-art searches, and engaging in hands-on patent search exercises. On Day 3 (August 29), Assoc. Prof. Oliver D. Semblante led sessions on patent specification and claim drafting, followed by a workshop on preparing technology disclosures. The day concluded with the presentation of outputs, finalization of patent or utility model applications, and the awarding of certificates to participants.

In his closing message, Dr. Feliciano G. Sinon, Director for Innovation, emphasized the importance of sustained IP capacity-building initiatives in advancing VSU’s vision of becoming a top research university.
