NCRC-V and VSU departments explore improvements in NSMPC’s coco coir and coco peat production
The National Coconut Research Center–Visayas (NCRC-V), together with the Visayas State University (VSU) Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DABE) and Department of Business and Management (DBM), conducted an assessment of the coco coir and coco peat production process flow of the Nava Settlers Multi-Purpose Cooperative Inc. (NSMPC) in Nava, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.
The assessment focused on reviewing the cooperative’s existing production process, identifying areas for improvement, and determining opportunities to enhance the efficiency and quality of its coco coir and coco peat production.
Through the technical assessment, the team examined the different stages of the production process and identified possible improvements in processing methods, facility arrangement, equipment use, and overall production flow. These improvements are intended to help the cooperative establish a more organized and efficient production system.
Meanwhile, the VSU Department of Business and Management provided inputs on the cooperative’s business operations and market opportunities. The assessment also aimed to identify potential strategies that could help NSMPC reach bigger and wider markets and strengthen the marketing of its coconut-based products.
Coco coir and coco peat are valuable products made from coconut husks, providing opportunities for coconut-producing communities to maximize the use of coconut by-products. Improving the production and quality of these products can help cooperatives develop additional sources of income while promoting the sustainable use of coconut resources.
The collaborative assessment reflects the commitment of NCRC-V and VSU to support coconut-based cooperatives through technical assistance, business development, and appropriate technologies. Through continued collaboration, the activity seeks to help NSMPC improve its production capabilities, access larger markets, and create better livelihood opportunities for its members.
The initiative also highlights the importance of partnerships among research, academic, and community-based organizations in strengthening the coconut industry and improving the livelihoods of coconut-dependent communities in Eastern Visayas.
