Viscan Engineers explore RDEI initiatives with Region 8 LGUs
The Faculty of Engineering is tapped by the Local Government Units (LGUs) in the region for potential RDEI projects and initiatives. These efforts align with the Faculty’s RDEI Agenda with real community needs on Disaster Risk Reduction Management.
VSU DCE, DGE launches Project SIGURADO with LGU Abuyog to Strengthen Community Resilience
VSU Department of Civil Engineering, in collaboration with the Department of Geodetic Engineering, Department of Meteorology and Department of Statistics, launched Project SIGURADO (Strengthening Integrated Geohazard Understanding and Resilience Actions for Disaster Operations). This project is a community-based initiative aimed at improving disaster resilience in vulnerable areas. The LGU Abuyog serves as the main community partner and beneficiary.
Project SIGURADO focuses on empowering local leaders, residents, and organizations through knowledge, skills, and tools to better understand geohazard risks and enhance preparedness. Its key strategies include localized hazard mapping, participatory training, capacity building, and strengthening Community-Based DRRM planning to reduce vulnerability and promote long-term resilience and sustainable development.
The project was formally launched through a two-day Training-Workshop on Community Resilience, Hazard Management, and Response Strategies.
This initiative represents a meaningful stride in strengthening community resilience and advancing disaster preparedness across the region.
DGE Capacitates LGU Javier on GIS mapping
The VSU Department of Geodetic Engineering conducted a training on “Building GIS Capacity in Local Government” in Javier, Leyte. As part of the department’s training series, this activity focused on the integration of household and demographic data in GIS for enhanced decision support.

The training was attended by key personnel from the LGU Javier with Municipal Engineering Office (MEO), Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator (MPDC), Municipal Assessor’s Office, and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).
DGE aims to conducts more training sessions as part of the department’s commitment to capacitating LGUs in the region.
DABE in-talks with LGU Matag-ob for flood mitigation and digital soil suitability mapping expertise
With the recent issues on flooding, the LGU Matag-ob approached VSU Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, represented by Engr. Nilo L. Leorna, to reinforce its commitment to science-based planning and resilient development.

This collaboration with VSU, along with Dr. Jeremy Mondejar of Cebu Technological University, aims to capacitate the LGU to build resilient, data-driven strategies for sustainable land use and disaster preparedness through a holistic planning initiative focused on flood mitigation and digital soil suitability mapping.
